Dal Makhani

This is the Punjabi recipe of lentil and curry mix with spices and butter, which is also famously known as Maa Ki Daal.

Preparation Time: 30 minutes

Cooking Time: 20 minutes

Serves: 4


2 cup black gram (udad dal)

¼ cup rajma

3 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste

1 cup tomato puree

1 finely chopped onion

2 finely chopped green chillies

2 teaspoon red chilly powder

1 teaspoon garam masala

1 teaspoon cumin seeds

2 tablespoon butter

2 tablespoon oil




Soak rajma overnight. Soak udad dal for 3-4 hours. Pressure cook rajma and udal for 4 whistles.
Take a pan and heat oil. Add cumin seeds, ginger-garlic paste and stir 2-3 times. Add onions and sauté till it turns colour. Add green chillies, tomato puree, salt, red chilly powder, garam masala and cook for 4-5 minutes. Add udad dal and rajma and cook it for about 8-10 minutes. If it is too thick add ½ glass of water.

Garnish it with butter and serve hot.
